About Devonport

The heart of Tasmania's North

Discover our lifestyle

VIBRANT and modern, Devonport is the commercial centre of the Cradle Country region and is a cosmopolitan well beyond its size. Here city, coast and country meet as a pivotal hub for Tasmania’s North West. Devonport is the Tasmanian home port of Spirit of Tasmania 1 & 2 ferries which sail daily to and from Melbourne. The city also boasts a major airport; a network of good roads leading out to Tasmania’s wilderness wonderland, and other unique delights that will entertain any visitor.
DEVONPORT is a shopper’s city. Browse in boutiques and speciality shops, and enjoy eating out in the cafes, bistros and restaurants. Food here is served fresh from local paddocks to the plate, and is presented in a variety of cuisines – Modern Australian, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Mexican to name just a few.
A CITY on the sea, Devonport makes the most of its postcard-perfect coastline, which can be accessed from right in the heart of the city. The much-loved Mersey River Foreshore walking track leads from the city centre to the Mersey Bluff Beach. Here you will find the upgraded Mersey Bluff precinct including a new surf club, Drift Restaurant and a state of the art children’s playground. Enjoy the family-friendly beach, barbecue areas and a well-appointed caravan park. The Bluff itself and its landmark lighthouse are a stunning backdrop to explore.

Explore our history

STEP back in time and discover the stories of Devonport’s past accomplishments. Home Hill is the former homestead of Australia’s only Tasmanian-born Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons, and his wife Dame Enid. The property is open for visitors to enjoy, with mementoes of the Prime Ministerial days on display. History also lives on at the Devonport Maritime Museum, where the region’s sea-faring past is celebrated – naval, freight, fishing and ferries. The restoration of the Julie Burgess vessel is a must see. Nearby at Mersey Bluff, authentic Aboriginal rock engravings can be seen in their original location and the lifestyle of Tasmania’s tribal Aborigines is depicted on dioramas at Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Five minutes from the city, a vintage steam train experience takes passengers on a 30-minute round trip from the Don River Railway station to Coles Beach. The train runs regularly throughout the day, and visitors can get up close to the restoration work taking place in the workshop.
